Free checklist

What your month-end close should actually produce.

“The books are done” can mean anything from every account reconciled and statements issued, to transactions imported and roughly categorised. This is 27 checks across five stages that tell you which one you're getting.

  • Reconciliation, every account tied to a statement, not just imported
  • Coding, nothing hiding in a catch-all account
  • Completeness, what's missing is harder to spot than what's wrong
  • Review, the step that turns bookkeeping into information
  • Delivery, with the unusual items flagged

How to use it

Run it against last month, not next month.

Anything you can't tick is either a process gap or a question worth putting to whoever currently does your books. Two or more misses usually means the bookkeeping is happening but the reporting around it isn't, which is fixable, and rarely a matter of spending much more.

  • Are all accounts genuinely reconciled, or just imported?
  • Does anyone raise the unusual items with you?
  • Can you answer a margin question from what you receive?
  • Do you know what date your statements arrive?
  • Is there anything to compare the month against?
